“Build your house on a firm foundation.”
That advice often seems empty, especially since most of us are not professional homebuilders. But think about it: building anything directly on the ground without a foundation will likely fail. Soil shifts, unable to handle the enormous weight of a house. That’s why most folks start with a concrete slab poured right on-grade.
When constructing a life, the foundation you start with is even more vital. And the options are endless: career, education, emotions, family, tragedy. Choosing one, you grasp a bit of vision and harness some natural abilities to get the house up. It takes a while, but the life you imagined starts taking shape. Until…
Cancer. COVID-19. Divorce. Demotion. Addiction. Abuse.
Hitting rock bottom has a way of uncovering the shiftiness of the soil on which we’ve built. And it’s only by God’s grace that we see the better foundation on which to build a life: Jesus Christ (1 Cor. 3.11). Just as Dr. Richard says, “Jesus is the stratum rock of salvation on which you must lay your foundation.” And in the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus used a metaphor to describe two ways we actualize His salvation and build a life on it (Matt. 7.24-27).
Build on the sand of human perspective. Sure, you can quote Scripture. You profess the reality of sin, repentance, and God’s glorious forgiveness. But you rely on human reason and emotion as absolute truth. On such unstable material, your life constantly cracks and will crumble.
Build on the rock of God’s Word. You live from God’s point of view, relying on the Scriptures as a detailed revelation of the God who is Love and Truth and Life itself. By prayerfully reading, reflecting on, and applying God’s Word, you participate with Him in constructing a life previously unimaginable.
